This is a 2 day course

SMSTS Refresher

Who should attend?

The two-day SMSTS Refresher course is for delegates who have previously passed the full five-day Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) course and can provide proof of attendance. It aims to bring health and safety knowledge up to date, as well as giving a thorough overview of the legislative changes and their impact in the workplace. The course includes a wide range of topics, many building on the previous five-day SMSTS course programme, as well as introducing new subjects.

Only those delegates who have passed the five-day CITB Site Manager Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) course and can provide evidence of this are eligible to attend the two-day refresher course. Delegates need to have passed the full five-day SMSTS course within five years of their refresher course start date to be eligible. If you need to do the full course, please see the 5-day SMSTS Course.

Aims and Objectives of the Refresher Course

  • to improve awareness of recent developments in construction, legislation and health, safety, welfare and environmental issues;
  • to identify measures that will assist the practical implementation of responsibilities established by new legislation, and new working practices.

At the end of the course delegates will be:

  • aware of and able to implement all updated health, safety, welfare and environmental legislation which affects them in their role as a manager;
  • aware of and able to implement new guidance and industry of best practice;
  • more aware of their health and safety duties and responsibilities.

Course Material

Each delegate will be issued with the official CITB Construction Skills workbook and supporting material to assist them both during and after the course - this material will contain information, guidance and forms to assist workers. The SMSTS Refresher course will be delivered over two days. Delegates must attend both days.

  • Buffet lunch and refreshments each day
  • All certification costs and exam fees
  • Free car parking
  • SMSTS study books, "Construction Site Safety Volume 1 and Volume 2", RRP £69.95

  • Brief Description: This study book is the leading publication within the construction industry for guidance on current construction health and safety legislation. It is revised annually to take into account the latest changes to construction legislation and new or updated health and safety guidance and procedures.

    It is a must-have publication for all candidates attending the ConstructionSkills Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) course, as it is the only publication that brings EVERYTHING you need to know about construction site health and safety together in one place.

    Each module is loose leafed and provides practical, accurate and authoritative advice on all the important areas of construction health and safety within the existing legal framework and requirements.

    60 of the 65 modules cover specific topic areas in relation to health, safety, welfare and the environment, whilst the remaining five (in the 'Miscellaneous' section) provide information that may be helpful to people on a construction site.

    The content of each module balances the requirements of relevant legislation, as it applies to the construction industry and provides practical guidance on how to comply with the legislation. By studying individual modules, users will be able to assess the legal responsibilities of themselves and others, and decide how best to organise work activities on a construction site in a safe and healthy manner.
