NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety

The NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety is the flagship NEBOSH award and is the first UK vocational qualification to be developed specifically for health and safety professionals. Since its introduction in 1988 it has become established as the most popular qualification of its kind, with over 10,000 students having successfully gained the Diploma.

The NEBOSH Diploma, more details of which can be found at the website of the BCF Group in Nottingham, provides the core health and safety knowledge (transferable across industry, commerce and the public sector) which, combined with understanding and appropriate application, underpins the competent performance of an occupational health and safety practitioner.

The NEBOSH National Diploma is the qualification for aspiring health and safety professionals, building directly upon the foundation of knowledge provided by the NEBOSH General Certificate. It is designed to provide students with the expertise required to undertake a career as a safety and health practitioner and also provides a sound basis for progression to postgraduate study.

The NEBOSH National Diploma qualification is divided into four units, each of which is assessed separately:

  • Unit A: Managing health and safety
  • Unit B: Hazardous substances in the workplace
  • Unit C: Workplace and work equipment safety
  • Unit D: Application of health and safety theory and practice

  • Units A, B and C are each assessed by a 3 hour exam held on nationally set days in January and July each year. Unit D is assessed by an 8,000 word workplace-based project which is submitted to NEBOSH in March or September of each year. You can take your exams together or spread them over a period, but to achieve the full NEBOSH National Diploma qualification, all units must be completed within 5 years of enrolment. We recommend exams are taken together following the course.

Holders of the NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety may use the designatory letters "DipNEBOSH" after their name.

The qualification meets the academic requirements to apply for Graduate Membership (Grad IOSH) of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). This is the first step to becoming a chartered health and safety practitioner as a Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH). It also accepted by the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) as meeting the academic requirements for full membership (MIIRSM). The National Diploma provides a sound basis for progression to MSc level: A number of UK universities offer MSc programs that accept the National Diploma as a full or partial entry requirement.

Entry Requirements for the NEBOSH National Diploma

There are no formal entry requirements for the NEBOSH National Diploma, however candidates should consider that this is professional level qualification, approximately equivalent to Level 6 (degree level). Achievement of the NEBOSH General Certificate or direct equivalent prior to undertaking the Diploma course is highly recommended.

There is no denying that this is a comprehensive health and safety qualification, and although the NEBOSH Diploma is hard, it is certainly achievable to those who apply themselves and commit fully to putting in the work and self-study required. It is certainly a worthy health and safety qualification to have, with many opportunities open to successful candidates after completing the NEBOSH Diploma.

    Course Material

Each delegate will be issued with a course workbook to assist them both during and after the course which will contain information, guidance and forms to assist them. The course is designed to be highly interactive, allowing delegates the opportunity to develop their skills with the support of the course tutor.

Delegates are also issued with three official NEBOSH study books.

    Course Tutor

Our health and safety consultants are highly qualified and experienced professionals with a background in delivering engaging and effective training. All trainers hold Chartered or Graduate membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).

The course will be delivered over 35 days in total, delivered in blocks of one week (a total of 7 weeks spread over 4 months).

As well as the 35 tuition days, candidates should be aware there is a significant element of private self study required. NEBOSH estimate this to be 257 hours spread over the duration of the course; however this will vary from candidate to candidate depending on past experience and knowledge.

There is an optional 3 day revision module held at the completion of the course and prior to the exams, which can be booked either at the time of booking or at any time during your course.

On successful completion of the 3 exams and project you will receive a NEBOSH accredited qualification: the NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety. All exams are marked externally by NEBOSH appointed examiners.

To acknowledge the achievements of successful Diploma candidates, NEBOSH hold an annual graduation & awards ceremony. Eligible Diplomates will be invited to book a place at this prestigious event in April or shortly after your results are issued.

35 days training followed by 3 days revision (optional) and 3 exams (of 3 hours each) spread over 3 days (exams are held on NEBOSH nationally set dates in January or July). A project is completed in the candidates own workplace and submitted in March or September.

Unit A, B, and C are assessed by a 3 hour exam each held on a separate day.

Unit D (the project) is an 8,000 word report completed in the candidates own workplace and submitted to NEBOSH for marking in March or September. There is a fee for this unit (included in the examination fees below).
