NEBOSH General Certificate Practical (NGC3)

The NGC3 unit of the NEBOSH General Certificate is the practical application, which aims to assess the candidate's ability to conduct an unaided and unassisted inspection of their own place of work, and subsequently to provide a report on their findings to management, with suitable recommendations and clear proposals for actions. Candidates should aim to complete the inspection and report in two hours, and in examination conditions as near as possible. Whilst supervision is not required, candidates must sign a declaration stating that it is all their own work, and previously prepared reference material is not allowed.

When conducting the inspections, candidates should look out for examples of hazards and working practices including, but not limited to:- fire risks, manual handling issues, unsuitable or missing protective equipment, coshh hazards, welfare considerations such as workplace temperature and lighting intensity etc. The timescale of actions should also be included, such as the immediate removal of a hazard or the more longer-term implementation of safety training courses. The proposed actions to deal with the hazard should be realistic, practical and appropriate.

As well as deficiencies, candidates should also make reference to safe working practices and point out where sufficient controls are already in place. The exact requirements of the NGC3 practical will be explained on the NEBOSH General Certificate course.

The management of the company should be consulted before undertaking the NEBOSH General Certificate Practical inspection to ensure that it can be done without endangering the candidate or others. Company names and other confidential information may be omitted.
